The Joy 11 is dedicated to all the children who lost their lives on 9/11/2001 and all the children left behind as they lost loved ones. I have engraved here, 4 sides of children’s drawings that I duplicated onto the surface by engraving them into the sculpture. One side is dedicated to toddlers up to 6 years old. My own grandchildren Luke, showing his love of Star Wars and then Emmie with her little caterpillar feet nicely placed around the cut-off rebar sections and her self portrait in blue and red. The next side shows drawings of various different wild animals done by my grandaughter Ellie when she was 7 years old. Then we have two 15-year-old drawings of Kay Krapf’s grandchildren, Daniel and Kailey. We can see the drawings maturing with their renditions of teenager styles. Finally, there is Elizabeth, Kays 17-year-old granddaughter, showing her cap and scroll as she was getting ready to graduate. She chose the year 2001 as the dedication year instead of her own. All these drawings engraved into the Joy 11 memorial remind me of ancient petroglyphs.
